If you’re in the market for some quality Aberdeen-Angus genetics then a trip to Ireland might be in order this weekend for Michael Sheahan’s Blacks on Draft production sale from his prize winning Luddenmore herd.
There may only 16 lots on offer from the herd, but rest assured they’ll be of a high quality. Having established the herd with some of the breed’s greatest bloodlines, he’s offering heifers that would suit anybody’s herd and I’m sure one or two will likely find themselves on the show circuit over here or across the water.
The first of the top picks for me has to be Luddenmore Elba J070 (lot 98). By the top performance sire Rawburn Rommel E423, she is out of the 8000gns Netherallan Elba F057 who is dam of the £20,000 Luddenmore Eclipse J067, junior stock sire at Old Glenort.
Next up is Luddenmore Elba K085, a half sister to the previously mentioned lot being out of Netherallan Elba, she is by Young Dale Touch Down 36M. With the proven performance of the sire and the presence of the mother, this is sure to be a heifer not to be missed.
Then I’ll be intrigued to know what Luddenmore Miss Essence J071 is like. By DMM Posi-Traction 57P and out of the DMM Flex 24E daughter DMM Miss Essence 147H, she is half sister to the 28,000gns Penguin Eldarado, stock sire at Carlhurlie.
For those of you who took a fancy to last year’s Royal Highland Show male and reserve champion Luddenmore Mr Edition (stock sire at Ballathie), Luddenmore Miss Essence J052 might just have to be on your shopping list as she’s full sister. Out of the twice Canadian champion DMM Miss Essence 21R, she is by Hoff Limited Edition.
Having been described by Michael Sheahan as one of the best cows in his herd, it will be with some reluctance he is offering Luddenmore Ellen Erica K098, a daughter of Elliot Erica E019. Erica K098 is by Rommel and is full sister to an All Ireland junior champion.
The penultimate pick for me is Luddenmore Fleur L134, a daughter of the great Netherton Fleur B199 by Young Dale Touch Down 36M. Again this is a pedigree likely to attract a lot of attention.
The only others worth mentioning are of course the Jody daughters, but for me it would be Luddenmore Jody K077, a daughter of Alistair Clark’s Royal Highland female champion Duncanziemere Jody D147. This female line is a proven classic over here and in Ireland so is bound to be highly thought of come sale day.
The sale starts at 2.30pm and will also include embryos offered by Jerry Henchy, Friarstown Angus, and the regular run of Angus females catalogued for the Carrick on Shannon sale.
