Last week’s Sedgemoor multibreed sale saw a top call of 4000gns paid for Charolais cow Balbithan Tulip from Andrew White, Swanage. Homebred 2002-born Tulip was sold in calf to a September service by Chunal Dougie and with her August-born heifer calf Balbithan Gladioli at foot. She found a new home with Mr Beaty, Trowbridge.
Messrs White also sold a 2008-born cow Balbithan Dallas, due September to homebred Balbithan Eria and with an August-born Eria heifer calf at foot. She met a final call of 3500gns from N A McInerney, Exeter.
Mrs McInerney also bought served heifer Balbithan Fudge. Served in early April by Wesley Furnish, she is by Newhouse Benson out of the homebred Balbithan Sherbert. She sold for 3050gns.
The Charolais breed also took the top honours in the bull lines, when D R Stacey of St Austell sold Balbithan Felix, a 24 month proven easy calver for 3500gns. Felix was snapped up by Mr Viner, Oxford.
Next best was a very shapely 22 month old British Blue bull from M D and K E Lanfear, Pilning, the Bluegrass Cyclone sired Woodston Fabio. This ET bred bull bull sold at 3000gns to P Rood, Compton Dundon.
Heading the Limousin breed was Loosebeare Festin, a June 2010-born Rainbow Simon son out of Hugginhayes Primrose. With an EBV in the top 10% of the breed Festin sold at 2700gns to M J Pidsley, Honiton.
Other continental bulls sold at 2500gns twice for the British Blonde Megray Dell from S M and D Skinner of Beaworthy and a black Salers bull Rigel Hammond from Rigel Pedigree, Yarm, North Yorkshire.
Native bulls rose to 2550gns for a 24 month old Aberdeen-Angus from N J Harris, Dartmouth. Hoodown Black Baron is by Gear Beezer and was bought by E J and S Kennen, Wiveliscombe.
At 2500gns was another Aberdeen-Angus, 22 month Nealford Proud Eric from J H Neale and Sons, Launceston, by Warrenho Just Eric and out of an Alan Robin bred Lanson Prunella. And at the same money was Hereford bull Greenyards 1 Hubble, a son of Greenyard Euripedes from H B Allman and Son.
Limousin females were also in demand, with J J and B D Comer selling a trio of Bernish Alfy daughters, Moonleaze Fioness, Flojo and Faith at 2250gns, 2200gns and 2140gns, respectively. Meanwhile, Patrick Greed, sold heifers at 2150gns and 2025gns twice.
In the younger cattle David and Anne Wheeler sold Rosecroft Grant, a Rainbow Simon son at 1620gns and a nine month old British Blue heifer, Newpole Goddess, from Newpole Blues traded at 1450gns. This one is a Rosemount Milon daughter.
Commercial sucklers
Earlier on the same day, Greenslade Taylor Hunt saw a good entry of sucklers for the April suckler cow sale, which met a full crowd around the ring and resulted in a total clearance.
Top was £1700 for a 2008 born Charolais, with a two month old bull calf from J Wylde, Woolavington. A strong Blue cross cow with a three month Limousin heifer calf from D H Creed, Martock hit £1580 and a 2007-born Simmental cow with Limousin bull calf from P Thrussell of North Curry rose to £1620.
