This weekend’s Charolais sale at Carlisle features a number of interesting lots and will no doubt see some good prices for the best of the bulls on offer. However, it is interesting to not a number of bulls for sale with less desirable calving figures. That said more than three-quarters of the bulls entered have an above average terminal sire index, so there will no doubt be something there to suit every taste and budget.
Anyway, as ever, we’ve taken a look through the catalogue and picked out what we believe should be some of the leading lots on offer. As always these are only our selections so feel free to add your own comments too.
First to warrant a mention in the bulls for us is Balthayock Flamenco (lot 24) from Major Walter. This Balthayock Adonis son is out of Balthayock Alicia, a Balmyle Thunderbird daughter and has an impressive set of figures, with a calving value of +6.5 and a TSI of +73 and an SRI of +72. He also has a muscle figure of +6.
And another from the same home also warrants a mention, being Balthayock Fandango (lot 29). This one is a son of the top performance sire Swalesmoor Cracker out of Meardy Othello daughter Balthayock Vindication. He comes with a TSI of +54 and an SRI of +57.
Then next pick for us is Thrunton Flashgordon (lot 32) from the Campbell family. A son of Newhouse Bigal, he combines some of the best lines at Thrunton, being out of a Talisman daughter in the form of Thrunton Bonnie. He has a TSI of +43 and an SRI of +33.
One from Danny Sawridge’s Swalesmoor herd is next in the line up, being Swalesmoor Falcon (lot 40), an Ellerton Alberto son out of Swalesmoor Caramel, a Balthayock Universe daughter. He catches the eye for his positive calving figure of +7.2 and comes with a TSI of +44 and an SRI of +45.
After that we like the look of Goldies Frontier from Hamish Goldie (lot 52). This Hofmeister son is out of Goldies Diana, a Killadeas Original daughter out of Blelack Ripple, dam of Goldies Unbeatable. He sells with a TSI of +52 and an SRI of +51.
Hamish Goldie’s next bull Bonerbo Fire (lot 55) may also attract some interest for his combination of bloodlines, with his sire being Balmyle Bollinger, sire of the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferry, and having a similar breeding combination to 25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie and 22,000gns Inverlochy Fencer, being out of an Inverlochy Resolve daughter. He sells with a TSI of +42 and an SRI of +49.
And anyone looking for an easy calving Charolais could do worse then take a look at Rumsden Firstmate (lot 63) from Rupert Taylor Ltd. This Rumsden Cruiserweight son has a calving ease figure of +13.5 and is out of Rumsden Solitaire, a Silver Prometheus daughter.
Another to look out for should be Baillieston Forecast (lot 67). This Hofmeister son is out of Baillieston Venus, a Haymount Royce daughter and has a muscle figure of +6.2 combined with a calving ease of +6.3 leading to a TSI of +58 and an SRI of +60.
Esmor Evans has a strong run of bulls in the catalogue and one of those which may attract some interest is Maerdy Filaria (lot 86). He’s a son of Lincolnshire Duke out of Maerdy Davina, and combines Hofmeister and Maerdy Padirac lines in his grandparents. He has a TSI of +45 and an SRI of +46.
Close after him is Newhouse Fourstar (lot 88) from Bob and Kay Adam. This son of Sackville Claudius is out of Newhouse Tora, a Brampton Nocodar daughter. He sells with a TSI of +63 and an SRI of +53 and a muscle figure of +5.2.
And Newhouse breeding is behind the next pick too, in the form of Thrunton Firebrand, a Newhouse Bigal son (lot 97). He’s out of the Maerdy Nero daughter Thrunton Princess and has a TSI of +55 and an SRI of +44.
A combination of sale leading genetics comes next in the form of Edenhurst General (lot 120) from Peter Vasey. This son of the 55,000gns Sportsmans Columbo is out of Edenhurst Pia, dam of the Perth champion Edenhurst Versailles and a Billingley Landmark daughter. He has a TSI of +27 and an SRI of +26, but a calving ease score of -21.1 which may not appeal to some buyers.
Welsh breeder Arwel Owen is next to get on the list with his bull Trefaldwyn Gemini (lot 123). He’s a son of Blelack Digger, himself a Balthayock Adonis son, and is out of Trefaldwyn Ruby, a Major daughter. With a TSI of +59 and an SRI of +52 he also comes with a calving figure of +14.6 and a muscle score of +5.5.
Blelack lines feature in our next bull too with Goldies Gameboy (lot 126) being a son of Blelack Blackberet. He is out of Goldies Veil, a Maerdy Naser daughter which is full sister to the 34,000gns Goldies Uppermost. He has a TSI of +58 and an SRI of the same value.
After that comes Balmyle General (lot 132), from Bill Bruce. This Balthayock Diplomat son carries some strong breeding on both sides, being out of Balmyle Dorothea, a Sackville Adonis daughter and has a TSI of +57 and an SRI of +56.
The first son of the £15,000 privately sold Edenhurst Cognac to be offered by the Milne family’s Elgin herd is next in our pick, with this being Elgin General (lot 141). He’s out of Elgin Sasha, a Coolnaslee Prospect daughter and has a TSI of +44 and an SRI of +39.
A proven female line is behind the bull to get a mark next, in the form of Sackville General (lot 163). He is out of Peter Heath’s successful cow Sackville Sapphire, dam of Sackville Claudius and Adonis, both sold to Newhouse and Balmyle and also dam of Sackville Dynamite and Eros. However, his sire could hold back some buyers, with him being a Goldies Champion son and carrying a calving figure of -18.1. That said his dam line could prove a real draw for many buyers.
A female preview, including the Rumsden dispersal sale will follow tomorrow…..
