Blakelaw 1 Calzaghe, owned by Hazel Whittaker, Halifax, West Yorkshire was judged Supreme Hereford Champion by judge Tony Whittaker (no relation) at the National Poll Show in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.
Senior and grand male champion, the four year old Calzaghe was brought out by freelance showman Andrew Hughes and bred by a proud on-looker at the show Jack Henry. He is out of Blakelaw 1 Yvonne and by Aldersley 1 Dwight. Blakelaw 1 Calzaghe has been a very successful show bull during the past two years and took the overall championship at the Great Yorkshire Show this year and completing the day for Heather, Calzaghe was later awarded the trophy for Poll Bull of the Year 2012.
Standing reserve was the intermediate and grand female champion Kinglee 1 Sadie 356, an 18 month old heifer from Peter Cobley, Kinglee Herefords, Leicestershire. Sadie, shown by Steve Edwards, has a Terminal Sire Index in the top 10% and is out of Costhorpe 1 Sadie 375 and by Churchlands 1 Pegasus.
The reserve grand and senior male championships went to the 23 month old Dorepoll 1 High Society, from L R and A M Ayre, South Molton, North Devon. High Society was bred by J E, R I and W Haire, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland and has had much show success during 2012.
In the intermediate male section top honours went to another Kinglee animal, Kinglee 1 Hercules from Peter Cobley, who was also by Churchlands 1 Pegasus. Standing reserve intermediate male was 2012 Scottish National Champion Panmure 1 Herman from J M Cant and Partners, Arbroath, Scotland.
Another breeder to make the long, but never the less, successful journey down from Scotland was Robert Wilson from J R B Wilson and Sons, Kelso in the Borders. Two of their young bull took the junior and reserve championship in the form of Romany 1 Jackaroo and Romany 1 Jackpot.
In the female classes, Bromley 1 Vanessa 386 from Mark and Maddy Roberts, Herefordshire, took the senior female championship before going on to be judged reserve grand female champion. This one is by Dorepoll 1 Crown Royal. Kinglee 1 Fashion, owned and exhibited by James Ludgate, stood reserve to Vanessa in the senior female championship.
The reserve intermediate female championship went to the two year old Dendor 1 Echo 20th from breed stalwarts D E, E D and A L Jones, Caersws, Powys, while the junior championship went to the 12 month old Dendor 1 Lilac Wine 13th from the same home. She is by Hawkesbury 1 Prosper. The reserve junior female championship went to Frenchstone P1 Boo from L R amd A M Ayre.
