It has to be hoped that today’s Hereford sale at Hereford and Limousin sale at Newark aren’t a barometer of the upcoming bull sales season, with both fixtures failing to excite and trade at both leaving vendors somewhat disappointed.

Leading the day’s trade at Hereford at 3800gns was Solpoll 1 Hero from the McMordie family, Northern Ireland. This Fisher 1 Charlie son is out of Solpoll 1 Stella and was junior Hereford champion at Balmoral earlier in the year as well as being performance recorded champion at the same show. He sold to J Walker, Stockton-on-Teme.

Second best of the bulls was a 3500gns call for another from the same home, Solpoll 1 Haymaker, a Solpoll 1 Dynamite son out of Solpoll 1 Starlet. He went  to M Jeffries, Harrogate.

Then making 3200gns was Cathedral 1 Manitoba from H M Scarterfield. Sired by Hawkesbury 1 Peppercorn he is out of Cathedral 1 Victory. This one had been champion in the pre-sale show and sold to P and A M Riley, Towcester.

And selling for 3000gns was Shraden 1 Horlicks from M J and H M Timmis. He is a son of Greenyards 1 Eagle and out of Shraden 1 Alice D247. This one also found a new home with Mr Walker.

Best price in the females at Hereford was a bid of 3600gns for Romany 1 Dawn A84 H38 from the Wilson family, Kelso. This heifer is by the great breeding Baybridge 1 Atlas and out of Romany 1 Dawn R22 C16 and sold to W and P Eddes, Tranent, East Lothian.

Following that at 3300gns was Mara 1 Dowager 19 from Messrs Borwick. Sired by Mara Excel she is out of Mara Dowager 17. And selling for 3000gns was Mara Bonny 28 from the same vendors. She is by F H Diamond and out of Mara Bonny 20 and was snapped up by J H Evans and Sons, Caerws.

Averages; show females £2290.31, bulls £2330.19, non-show females £2140.59 (Hereford Market Auctioneers).

Meanwhile the best of the trade at Newark was a 4500gns bid from Messrs Turner, Fordham, for Cockleshell Vienna, a 2004-born cow by Cockleshell Olympus out of Cockleshell Patsy, she sold suckling a heifer calf by Chytodden Conan and back in calf to Grahams Elliott.

The only other one to sell at 4000gns or more was Bailgate Flavia, a Haltcliffe Vermount daughter from Messrs Ward. She’s out of Greenwell Donatella and sold having run with Bailgate Fearless to Messrs Bird.

More news and averages to follow on Monday.
