Halkirk exhibitor Sandy Murdoch won the championship for the fifth year in a row today at Aberdeen & Northern Marts show and sale of weaned calves at the Caithness Livestock Centre.

Sandy, of 3 Vraal, took the title with a six-month-old Limousin cross heifer in the Quoybrae event, which was sponsored by hauliers W.D. Cormack & Sons, Castletown.

His champion scaled at 353kgs and was sold for £1250 to show judge Donnie Budge, Brae Edge, Castletown, on behalf of an undisclosed buyer.

The reserve champion was a 375kg Limousin cross bullock from W and K Campbell, Mid Calder, Thurso, which sold for £880.

A total of 559 weaned calves were sold with 327 bullocks averaging 220.p per kg (+22./kgon the year) to a high of 276.5p/kg and 232 heifers averaging 201.6p/kg (+17p/kg) to a high of 284.8p/kg.
