Last Friday’s sale of working dogs at Skipton saw a new world record set at 8800gns and a healthy trade despite a lack of farming buyers at the ringside.

The record breaker, Bob a 15 month old black and white dog which was purchased by Howden, Selby-based John Bell at Skipton last year as a 13 week old pup for 300gns. Bred by Broughshane, Ballymena-based Ivan Stevenson, Bob was knocked down on Friday to an undisclosed telephone buyer and it is understood he now heads to the USA.

John Bell’s 8800gns record breaker Bob

Second best of the day was a bid of 3500gns for Nan, a three year old smooth coated black and white bitch from former world record holder Shaun Richards. This one was bred by Peter Blain, Bala and is by Gel out of Nell.

Already placed in open trials and with national points under her belt, Nan sold locally to Stephen and Tracey Fawcett, of Fold House Farm, Drebley, Barden, for use at home by the couple’s 23-year-old twins Samantha and Ben.

Following that at 2950gns was Fly, a ten-month-old black and white bitch with trial potential from Northern Ireland’s William Torrens, Castlederg, Belfast. By his own Ben, out of Kim, the quality young dog found a new home on the east coast of England with beef and sheep hill farmer Edmund Nicholson, Briscoe Farm, Whitby. Fly will be used solely as a work dog.

John Bell was then back in the money when selling Folly at 2800gns. This 16-month-old black and white bitch, bred in Northumberland by shepherdess Emma Gray, a member of the 2012 English National team, and a full sister to Shap-based Katy Cropper’s well-regarded novice trial dog Zac, sold to an undisclosed beef and sheep farmer in Cumbria, who will use him for both work and nursery trials later this year.

Mr Bell also achieved 2650gns for Skye, a 15-month-old tri-coloured bitch bred in Marston Montgomery, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, by 2012 English National champion Ben Smith. By his own Ben, Skye was bought at nine-months-old by Mr Bell and went to a purchaser from the Midlands.

This price was matched late in the day when Irishman W Lawrence, Money Moor, County Derry, sold his tri-coloured bitch Faye, two-years-old next month, by Tom Lawrenson’s Spot. Already proven in nursery trials, she found a new home at Holmrook, Cumbria, with Arthur Temple.

Tal y Bont-based Emrys Jones, then took 2400gns for his June, 2011-born black and white dog Drift, also by Tom Lawrenson’s Spot, out of P H Blenkinsop’s Nell. Drift found a new home in Ayrshire.

And Irish breeder Patrick McGoldrick, Meenadreen, County Donegal, then sold at 2300gns. This price was paid for Mr McGoldrick’s tri-coloured bitch Meg, fully home-bred by his own Sweep and Yale. The dog also found a new home in Ayrshire with Jamie Shennan, Old Dailly, Girvan.

A brace of entries followed that at 2200gns. First up was a two-year-old tri-coloured dog, Mynydd Meic, known as Mike at home, from Welsh trialist Meirion Williams, of Llwyn Onn, Brooks, Welshpool, Powys. By fellow Welshman Aled Owen’s 2008 World Sheep Dog Trials champion Roy, out of S Jones’ L’Minster Holly, Mike returned to Wales following a successful phone bid.

The second at 2200gns, a 23-month-old tri-coloured dog, Baledmund Sam, from South Cheshire’s Gus Dermody, presenter and commentator for BBC2′s ‘One Man and His Dog,’ sold to a Scottish buyer from Perthshire.

Also heading for Scotland after being purchased for 2100gns was Kate, a two-year-old black and white bitch from J Whitton, Spaldington, Doncaster. By the 2010 English National champion Milo, she was bought by Sandy McCullough, Dalmellington, Ayrshire, and will take her place as a work dog and potential nursery trial competitor.

An older black and white dog, the three-year-old Joss, a former East Anglian Trial champion, from Tim Bulgin, who farms between Thetford and Downham Market in Norfolk, sold well at 1900gns when joining Roy Campbell, Drimsynie. Joss is fully home-bred, being by Mr Bulgin’s Jip, out of Floss.

P Satterthwaite, Kirkby Stephen, then sold his August, 2010-born sable and white bitch Highfield Lexy, by D Harrison’s Ben, out of M Bowmer’s Shadwell Kit at 1850gns. She sold to an undisclosed buyer from Dalmellington, Ayrshire.

Close behind at 1800gns (£1,890) was Scottish vendor Ian Fleming, Douglas, Lanark, with his 19-month-old brown and white bitch Kate, by Tanhill Sweep, out of Jen. She joined Matt Tomlinson, Muggington, Derbyshire.

Steeton’s Beverley Fort, now operating under her own Beverton prefix, achieved the same price with her promising young home-bred black and white dog, the 11-month-old Beverton Gud, said to be out of her two best dogs – Ben, a product of Jim Cropper’s renowned Sid, who ran in three World Sheep Dog Trials, out of Bess, by J Burrows’ Scott. Known as Judd at home, he returned to Mr Cropper and will be aimed at nursery trials later this year.

Northumberland breeder Tony Isley, Morpeth, made 1750gns with his December, 2011-born black, white and mottled bitch Cree, by B Bell’s Moss, out of J Brunton’s Tanhill Bess. She sold to a buyer from Kinross, Scotland.

Averages; broken registered dogs £2380, part-borken registered dogs £878, unbroken registered dogs £362, broken unregistered dogs £578, part-broken unregistered dogs £494, unbroken uregistered dogs £47 (Craven Cattle Marts).

Monday’s sale of Holstein bulls at Skipton saw the championship honours and top price of the day fall to Brian Moorhouse’s Aireburn herd.

Mr Moorhouse’s sale topper was Aireburn Alan, a 16 month sold son of Gillette Windbrook out of Dunnerdale Stormatic Aldina, a Comestar Stormatic daughter with eight generations of VG or Ex dams behind her. He sold at 2700gns to Angus Dean, Threshfield. As elsewhere this spring bull trade was patchy, with only half of those forward finding new homes.

In the milking cattle sold on the same day the best price was a £2550 call for the third prize fresh calved heifer from David and Claire Lawson, Arthrington. Their leader sold to Daniel Reed, York, who continues to buy in volume to suffice is expansion needs.

He also paid £2480 for the reserve championship, the second prize newly calven heifer from the Senterprise herd of father and son Fred and Mark Houseman, who trade as Church Farm Enterprises at Burton Leonard.

Mr Moorhouse was then back in the money, selling his first prize fresh calved heifer, Aireburn Sam Sarah, at £2300. She is by Regancrest Mr Sam, out of Aireburn Talent Sarah, who is also rated Ex and has twice produced yields of more than 11,000kg. Just shy of a month calved and giving 30 litres she also sold to Mr Reed, who also paid £2300 for the first entry into the sales ring, a newly calven heifer from Bishop Thornton’s Peter Baul.

The Lawsons also stepped forward with the first prize fresh calved cow, a second calver that also headed the class prices when sold for £2100. Mr Reed was the buyer again.

Averages; pedigree heifers £2127, fresh calved cows £1723, bulls £1681 (Craven Cattle Markets).

Monday’s dairy sale at Skipton saw a good trade for fresh milk, but only the pick of those forward were in demand as the slow start to spring is starting show in buyers’ confidence.

The sale recorded a joint top price of £2100 paid for both the day’s pre-sale champion and the reserve champion, both of which sold to Daniel Reed, Bielby, York.

Taking top honours in the show ring was a fresh calved heifer from husband and wife David and Claire Lawson, Mill Farm, Arthington. Giving 28 litres, the seven days calved heifer is a daughter of the Genus sire Sandy-Valley Bolton.

The second to make £2100 and the day’s reserve champion was the first prize fresh calved cow from the commercial dairy herd of local vendors David and Jill Pennock, Summerscales Farm, Bolton Abbey.

The runner-up, which had produced her second calf 13 days earlier and was giving 30 litres, was home-bred by their stock bull Talent, acquired from the Abbeyhouse herd of Craven Dairy Auction regulars Jennings Farmers, based at Hill House, Fountains, Ripon.

Selling at £2000 was another from the same home as the day’s champion, a third prize fresh calved heifer, another home-bred sired by the dairy bull Ramus. Milking at 29 litres, she also joined Mr Reed.

The Craven Dairy Auction ring is in action for the next two Mondays. First up next week (April 15) is a production sale of up to 50 pedigree Holstein maiden heifers aged six to 18 months from the Brimham Rocks Startover herd of Pat Gratton.

Ewe and lamb couples were well sought after at Skipton’s Easter show and sale of 375 ewes with lambs at foot yesterday, with trade hitting a high of £260/outfit for the day’s champions, a pen of five three-shear pedigree Texel ewes with six Beltex lambs from Graeme Jackson which sold to Kevin Marshall, Otley, who also paid £235 for the reserve champions, a same way bred pair of ewes with twin lambs.

A number of Easter lamb shows and sales at northern markets in recent days have…

A number of Easter lamb shows and sales at northern markets in recent days have seen a robust, if not always electric trade.

At Carlisle yesterday lambs met a decent demand, with the top price of the day a £114/head call for a Suffolk lamb from Judith Barbour, Rosefield, with this one selling to Amy Johnson, head chef at Borderway Cafe, second best was a £110 call for a Charollais lamb from Ben Radley, Loaningfoot, with this one again selling to Miss Johnson.

Trade at Skipton was a little more lively, reaching a peak of £155/head for a 49kg lamb from Robert Towers, Farleton, Lancaster, with this lamb being the day’s champion, a Beltex x Charollais lamb. This one sold to George Cropper, Samlesbury, Preston.

Selling for £146 was Mark Evans’ Suffolk sired reserve champion which weighed in at 52kg and was knocked down to Alex Riley of Riley’s Butchers, Rossendale.

From a 12-strong consignment, Robert Towers also put forward the second prize Continental-cross single lamb – his red rosette winner was champion – a 46kg Beltex x Charollais that fell for £136, or 295.7p/kg, to show judge Harry Wood, Bowland Foods, Preston. It is bound for regular customer John Thornber Butchers in Chorley Old Road, Bolton.

Further similarly bred entries also secured a first and second prize double for Mr Towers in the Continental-cross pairs class, both heading to the same buyers as his singles. The 38kg victors supplemented the Easter offering at Huntley’s Country Stores at £135 per head, or a show-topping by-weight high of 355.3p/kg, with the runners-up knocked down to Bowland Foods at £130 each, or 333p/kg. These, too, will be sold by John Thornber Butchers.

Mr Towers also chipped in with the top price per head Charollais pair at £143 apiece, bought by Mick Etherington on behalf of Farmer Copleys Farm Shop, Ravensknowle Farm, Purston Pontefract.

Mark Evans was again to the fore with the first prize Suffolk-cross pair of 42kg Spring lambs, bought at £143 per head, or 330.5p/kg, by Andrew Atkinson Livestock in Felliscliffe, Harrogate, on behalf of Roland Agar (Wholesale Butchers) in Ilkley. The overall Spring lamb selling average was £118.7p per head, or 284.59p/kg.

And Robert Towers was also on top form at Bentham, where a Charollais x Beltex lamb took the day’s championship for him and sold at £124 having tipped the scales at 38kg. This one sold to Vivers Scotlamb.
